Spoons for All!

Why this workshop: For more than 25 years, and with more than 3,000 people, we’ve taught spoon carving on this farm as a method for bringing people together and for accessing personal creativity. Spoon carving, for us, has always been an important act of community building.  Making something beautiful and useful with your hands reminds and encourages us of the greater things we can do. Please join us for a creative time of using your hands and minds to carve a spoon from green wood. All skill levels are welcome.

What you will learn: We will teach you how to carve a beautiful spoon using 3 traditional tools: a crooked knife, a straight knife and a draw knife. We’ll start with a block of white birch or cherry and end with a beautiful and useful spoon that should last a lifetime. And we’ll cover the philosophy and the practice that’s needed for all the steps along the way.

Elements of the workshop:

•   1.5 days to make it possible for everyone to leave with a completed spoon
•   Wood, tools and instruction 
•   Four meals together – lunch, dinner, breakfast, and lunch – to share experiences and learning
•   Lodging for one night at Knoll Farm

Workshop schedule: We’ll begin Saturday morning at 8:30 and end Sunday at noon.  Group size is limited to 18 (register early!) to ensure everyone gets attention and can move through the process at their own pace and return home with skills they can continue to use. We’ll take breaks to discuss wood, tools, spoons, yurts, the full moon, or whatever else comes to mind.  You can expect an unusual and inspiring weekend that gives you important skills, teaches you how to make a spoon, and leaves you wanting and able to create more things. 

Full workshop cost:

The cost of this workshops includes a fixed rate for four meals and lodging, plus a sliding scale tuition.

Room and meals (1 night/2 days): $200
plus
Workshop tuition: Sliding scale from $50-200. 

Commuter cost: $160-310 for meals and tuition only. 

We will be offering two complete scholarships for this workshop, covering room, board, and tuition.
